Once planted it will quickly establish itself and start producing a good crop of delicious fruit. About Bare Root Fruit Trees

  • Bare root fruit trees have been grown in a field and then lifted when they are at the required age for sale.
  • They are sold without a pot
  • Planting them is much easier because the tree is younger, weighs less and is easier to move
  • They are sold from late Autumn to early Spring
  • Keep the roots covered and moist until you’re ready to plant the trees
  • Your bare root trees will come in a dormant state so will have no foliage. However they have an abundance of buds that are ready to burst into life during spring. If you carefully bend the tree you’ll notice that it is fairly flexible, not brittle, which means there is still moisture and life within the tree. Alternatively you can do a simple bark test. If you gently scrape an area of bark from the surface of the tree you will see fresh and healthy green growth. This is a sign of a fit and strong tree that will spring into life the following season.

Planting Instructions:

Position your fruit tree in a sunny, sheltered spot to help maximize fruit ripening and protect it from extreme and adverse weather conditions such as strong winds and harsh frosts.

Digging the soil before planting is recommended for aeration, breaking up compacted subsoil and improving drainage; you should also remove any perennial weeds and add organic matter such as well rotted garden compost at this point too.

The planting hole should be about one third wider than the root system and the same depth, so that the level of the soil is equal to the soil mark on the stem of the tree. Sprinkle in some fertiliser around the base and sides and lightly fork over to mix in and to allow for easy extension of the root system.

Place the tree in the hole ensuring that trunk is upright, then refill with the excavated soil. Gently press down with the heel of your boot to firm the soil and water in well.

A newly planted tree should be watered once or twice a week during hot weather and less so during cool weather. This is dependent on soil type; if your soil is heavy clay you will find that you need to water less however if it is a light sand then you will have to water more often.

Care Instructions

Please ensure upon receipt you immediately fully submerge the root systems in water and leave to soak for at least 2 hours before planting.
